High seas: Auckland giraffe sets sail for Australia

A giraffe from Auckland Zoo has been relocated ahead of its journey across the Tasman.

The zoo's young male giraffe, Mtundu, was moved to the Ports of Auckland today, before being sent to Australia to join the regional breeding programme.

He travelled through the city in a purpose-built crate, with a view out - and in.

The zoo said the global giraffe population had plummeted by up to 40 percent over the last 30 years.
