The police watchdog has found an officer was 'unjustified' in tasering an Auckland man as he ran away.
In October 2015, police used road spikes to stop a stolen car that was fleeing officers. The driver then ran off and one officer chased him.
The officer believed the man was going to enter a nearby house, and tasered him twice to try and stop him.
The man was then arrested following a brief struggle in which he bit the officer.
The man complained about the force used during his arrest, and claimed the officer pushed him down a flight of stairs and tried to break his arm.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority (IPCA) has found the officer breached police policy by tasering the man because he was running away and not threatening to assault anyone.
The authority found the officer did not push the man down stairs or try to break his arm, and the force used during the arrest was justified.
