A New Zealand man has appeared in court in Brisbane after being extradited yesterday on charges related to an Australian-based sex offenders' network.

The 42-year-old, who cannot be named, faces nine charges of indecent treatment of a child dating back several years.

He was extradited as part of an international police operation launched in 1997.

Police have said they uncovered the online activities of two Australian men in the US who were posting explicit content of child exploitation onto a device belonging to the New Zealander.

The pair had abused a child they claimed to have adopted from a Russian surrogate and were jailed for more than 30 years.

The New Zealand man did not apply for bail when he appeared in court today in Brisbane.
