Waimarama residents are being told they can drink their water again without boiling it for the first time since last weekend.

A series of tests have come up clear for the Hawke's Bay settlement's water supply since the boil water notice was issued last weekend.

The cause of low-level E-coli contamination has been pinpointed as a mechanical fault when power was cut during a large scrub fire in the area last week.

The Hastings District Council said it was taking measures to try to stop that happening again.

It said it would keep putting chlorine in the water for the time being, saying people should run their taps for a while to make sure the chlorine has reached them.
