Woman escapes attempted kidnapping in Nelson

Police are investigating the attempted kidnapping of a woman in Nelson last night.

The 27-year-old woman was approached by three men in a vehicle as she walked home on Muritai Street, Tahunanui, about 10.30pm yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Alexander Bruning said one of the men offered the woman a lift. When she said no the man got out of the car and tried to drag her into it.

Mr Bruning said the woman managed to escape and run home, where she raised the alarm.

Police said the car was an early 2000 model white Subaru Legacy station wagon.

The man who tried to grab the woman is described as Maori, in his late 30s, tall and of solid build.

Police are appealing for any witnesses.
