Heavy rain is creating havoc, flooding houses and causing slips in Auckland and surface flooding in Wellington. Here's what you need to know.

Flooding

Auckland

  • 65mm of rain fell on west Auckland in just one hour, at about midday
  • Nearly 180 homes flooded across Auckland including: Glen Eden (65), Titirangi (43), Henderson (30), Avondale (20), West Harbour (10), and Te Atatu (8).
  • The Fire Service has rescued people from flood waters who are suffering from exposure
  • Multiple people had been trapped in floodwaters on Great North Road in New Lynn
  • Police has asked people to avoid the surburbs of New Lynn Henderson and Kelston
  • There is flooding in Kaukapakapa, Devonport, Parnell, Remuera, Eden Terrace, Blockhouse Bay, Morningside, Massey, Westgate, Whenuapai, and New Lynn.
  • Auckland Council says people should avoid the floodwaters as it could be contaminated

Road closures

  • Paradise Valley Road in Ngongotahu is blocked by a slip and a bridge on the road is washed out
  • Caspian Close footbridge closed
  • Falls Road, between Viv Davie-Martin Drive and Woodcocks Road, Warkworth
  • Twilight Rd (Kimptons Road to North Road)
  • Tourist Road, Clevedon
  • McNichol Road, from Tourist Road intersection
  • East Coast Road, Whakatiwai to Auckand/Waikato Boundary
  • West Road, Clevedon
  • Papakura-Clevedon Road, from Clevedon-Takanini Road to Clevedon town
  • Tawa Rd, Oneroa, Waiheke Island
  • North-Western Motorway left lane westbound closed after Lincoln Road
  • Great North Rd at intersection of Sabulite and Glenview Rds, Kelston

Emergency services in West Auckland have been swamped with calls and are asking for people to only call 111 if someone's life is at risk.

Rotorua

  • And a stream has burst its banks in Rotorua and residents are monitoring the situation.
  • The Metservice has put out a heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty
