Forestry worker death investigated

4:54 pm on 16 March 2017

A forestry worker has died in rugged terrain west of Gisborne.

The man, in his 40s, was found this morning by some of his workmates, who tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

Police said the man might have slipped and fallen in the steep terrain.

A rescue helicopter got as near as it could to the scene and landed paramedics who were taken the rest of the way by vehicle and on foot.

A search and rescue team will recover his body.

Health and safety in the forestry sector is going through an overhaul after 10 workers died in 2013.
