Auckland motorists are being warned to expect delays on the southern motorway, with lanes closed because of unexplained metal on the road near the Nelson Street off-ramp.

The debris was found on the motorway between Wellington Street and Curran Street.

One northbound lane has been closed and another is due to be shut down while the area is cleared.

Police said it was not known where the metal came from, with no visible signs of a crash, although NZTA said there was a crash earlier in the morning.
