Police say a man who fell from a boat in the Bottle Top Bay area near Papakura on Saturday, had been drinking heavily.
Police say Loielu Faiao, 33, fell overboard when a wave swamped the craft and his intoxication may have impaired his ability to swim.
Divers will search the area on Monday.
Mr Faiao was not wearing a life jacket.
