The Education Council is also investigating after it received a mandatory report from the school on Tuesday.

The teacher in question is now on leave and not teaching.

Detective Inspector Richard Corbidge said police were working closely with the school, Child Youth and Family and the Ministry of Education.

He said any matter involving children was highly sensitive, and the wellbeing and welfare of the children and the integrity of the investigation was the priority.
