A man driving a stolen van has been arrested after he broke through a police cordon in Auckland last night.

Police said an Eagle Helicopter followed the van after he was spotted about 11.15pm driving a stolen van in the Beachlands area in Auckland.

They said the man was not going very fast, and patrols on the ground were able to set up road spikes.

They spiked the van's tires and boxed it in using patrol cars but the driver forced one out of the way and kept on driving towards Bucklands Beach.

Police said he pulled into a driveway, parked the van and gave himself up just before midnight.
