The government will put $10 million of funding towards keeping the role of safety officer in the Police's commercial vehicle investigations unit.

The unit does full mechanical inspections and driver and vehicle compliance checks for trucks, buses, taxis and mobile homes.

Shortly after the plan to axe the position was announced, the road transport forum said cowboy truck drivers would now be able to go unnoticed.

The unit had been proposing to cut the 26 jobs because of a shortfall in funding but after meeting the Transport Agency's board, Transport Minister Simon Bridges joined Police Minister Paula Bennett in seeking more funding from Finance Minister Steven Joyce.

A spokesperson for Mr Bridges confirmed Mr Joyce had given the go-ahead.

The $10m would add to the $960m road-policing budget allocated by the Transport Agency.
