One dead in paragliding accident

One person died in a paragliding accident in Christchurch this morning.

The crash happened near Summit Road, in the Port Hills just south of the city.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 11.40am.

Police said no-one else was involved and they were attempting to notify the person's family.

The Civil Aviation Authority said it had sent an investigator to the scene of the crash.

A spokesperson for the authority said police at the scene had taken photographs and measurements, which would be handed over to the investigator when they arrived.

The spokesperson said the investigator would also be talking to a witness, who was understood to have seen the crash.
