Two people have been killed in a two-car crash north of Christchurch.
Two others were seriously injured in the crash, on State Highway 1 between Pineacres and Woodend at about 3.45pm.
St Johns spokesperson Noel Gleeson said one of the injured people was still trapped in a vehicle.
The other had been taken to Christchurch Hospital in a serious condition.
The fire service said two ambulances, four fire trucks and supporting vehicles were at the scene, along with a helicopter.
State Highway 1 was blocked and diversions were in place.
