A driver whose car crashed during a police pursuit in North Otago has been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police said they briefly pursued a car that had been speeding on State Highway 1 near Palmerston about 4.20pm.
It crossed the centre line about two minutes later, crashed and rolled off the road.
They said the driver had to be flown to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter because of the seriousness of the injuries.
The road was not blocked.
The Serious Crash Unit has been notified, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority was being advised, police said.
