Proposal for pharmacists to prescribe medicines

12:01 pm on 1 June 2010

Work is being done by the Pharmacy Council on whether some pharmacists could be trained to prescribe medicines.

The changes would initially target pharmacists who work in hospitals or in healthcare teams, rather than in community pharmacies.

Council registrar Bronwyn Clark says pharmacists wanting to prescribe, would have to undertake post-graduate training.
