Three prisoners have also been charged with aggravated assault and police have been investigating the force used by the guards at Auckland Prison at Paremeremo on 20 May.

Two prison security officers face assault charges, while a third faces a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice by turning a CCTV camera away from the incident.

At their first appearance in the North Shore District Court this morning, the guards' lawyer, Todd Simmonds, entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and they were granted interim name suppression for safety concerns.

The guards will next appear in court at the end of the month.
