Fears for missing Southland fisherman

5:40 pm on 26 June 2017

A search has failed to find a missing Southland fisherman and the police say they will try again tomorrow.

The operation began last night after the 28-year-old man, from near Invercargill, did not return from fishing off rocks at Slope Point.

Nineteen searchers have spent the day combing the coast around Slope Point in Southland looking for him.

The man is believed to have been fishing off rocks in the Fort Rose, Stirling Point area.

Search and rescue co-ordinator, Sergeant Ian Martin, said they had found the man's vehicle, tackle box and fishing rod but no sign of him.

Mr Martin said the air and sea were very cold so it was not looking good, but they had not given up.

"We've got 19 search and rescue people into the field split into teams searching east and west of the point that he was fishing."
