Police have shot and wounded a man in Nelson overnight after he threatened them, saying he had a gun.
The man was stopped by officers about 1.15am after he was seen driving erratically.
He ran off but was tracked by a police dog to a property in Waimea Road.
Tasman District Commander superintendent Mike Johnson said the man told the dog handler who confronted him he had a gun.
Armed officers were called and then entered the property.
Mr Johnson said the man threatened the officers, who fired one shot and hit him in the elbow.
He is now in a stable condition in hospital.
Mr Johnson said so far no firearm has been found at the property.
He said the man had been arrested on outstanding warrants for unrelated incidents and had also been charged with unlawfully being on a property.
