Heavy rain and gales are lashing New Zealand as a fierce winter storm pushes north, and snow is falling in parts of the country.
- More than 10,000 properties in the lower North Island are without power, with the biggest cuts in the Manawatu-Whanganui region and in towns just north of Wellington.
- Several state highways around the country are closed due to snow and ice.
- Flights are being affected and Interislander ferry sailings have been suspended.
- SH1 south of Kaikōura has reopened but the inland route remains closed until further notice.
