PowerCo said about 200 crew were focusing on reconnecting the homes in remote areas such as Waiouru and near Kimbolton, but wild winds and snow have made access difficult.

It said it would be making a big push to get everyone reconnected before more wind and rain which was expected to hit tomorrow night.

Check out aerial footage of downed power poles.

Power has been out in swaths of the central North Island since the winter storm barrelled up the country last week.

It blanketed snow over parts of the South Island and caused widespread surface flooding, power outages and disrupted travel from Wellington through to the central North Island and in the South Island.
