'Good response' from women in hepatitis C scare

4:14 pm on 9 June 2010

The Health Ministry says it has had a good response to its search for 55 New Zealand women who may have contracted hepatitis C at an abortion clinic in Australia.

The women are among 3500 who may have been deliberately infected at a Melbourne abortion centre between January 2006 and December 2009.

There have been 59 calls to Healthline, 49 of which were transferred to an Australian helpline where women can find out if they have any risk of the disease, which may have been spread by an infected doctor.

Testing of New Zealand women has begun, the ministry says, but it does not yet have reliable information on the number tested or any results.
