Norman Kingi was stabbed after disturbing a group of young people breaking into a vehicle, and died later in hospital.

Two girls aged 15 and 13 were originally charged with aggravated wounding, but the charges were replaced with murder when they appeared in the Hamilton Youth Court today.

Police earlier said it appeared Mr Kingi had disturbed a group of young people breaking into a vehicle and suffered a fatal wound during a fight.

Interim name suppression was granted for both defendants who made no application for bail.

They were remanded in custody to a youth justice residence to reappear in the High Court in Hamilton on 15 August.

The 15-year-old also faces a charge of interfering with a motor vehicle in the Youth Court.

Earlier a 12-year-old girl was referred to Youth Aid for matters relating to Mr Kingi's death.
