The Health Research Council has announced funding of more than $81 million for health research, to be carried out over the next three to five years.

The 67 successful projects include testing a therapeutic cancer vaccine and the possible development of a blood test to diagnose Alzheimers Disease.

Professor Tony Blakely of Otago University and his research team will receive almost $5 million for a programme to look at what New Zealand should spend additional health funding on.

He says the team will focus on equity, so that future interventions reduce inequalities as well as improve overall health.
