NZ police probe Google

10:45 pm on 10 June 2010

Police are investigating whether the global internet company Google has illegally collected personal data from New Zealand households.

The cyber crimes unit is carrying out the inquiry, following a complaint by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Google has admitted intercepting fragments of wireless internet data in more than 30 countries while photographing houses for its online map service, but says this was a mistake.

Inquiries have also started in Germany and Australia.
