About 20 domestic and regional flights in and out of Christchurch have been either delayed or cancelled so far today.

Flights were beginning to resume, but the airport said patchy fog remained, and until aircraft were able to land, departing passengers would be delayed.

Mr English was due to spend the day in the city attending several events.

A Christchurch Airport spokesperson said people should check with their airline to find the status of their flight.

Slips in Wellington and Bay of Plenty

In the North Island, a slip has closed State Highway 2 between Gisborne and Opotiki.

The Transport Agency said there were two slips in the Waioeka Gorge.

And the agency said due to further rockfall the the road was likely now to be closed all day.

And the Wellington City Council said a slip has reduced Birdwood Street in Karori to one lane.
