There was a sharp increase in people staying in hotels in April.

Statistics New Zealand says the number of people staying in hotels, motels, backpackers and holiday parks, rose 1% in April.

Overnight stays by international visitors rose 2%, compared to the same month last year, while domestic visitors remained flat.

Hotel patronage jumped 7% during the month, but motels, backpackers and holiday parks all had fewer guests.

The Otago and Auckland regions had the largest increase in guest nights during the month. Waikato and Wellington recorded the largest decreases.
