Eleven double-decker buses in Auckland have been taken off the road after a structural fault was found in a routine inspection.

Auckland Transport said reinforcing to the chassis was needed on the 11 buses, as well as on a further 14 buses that were due for delivery to NZ Bus.

Auckland Transport spokesperson Brendon Main said taking the buses off the road was a precautionary measure.

He said the repairs would be paid for by the manufacturer, not the ratepayer.

Extra single-deck buses will be put in place of those out of action.
