The two men were on the Greymouth-based fishing boat Wendy J, which got into trouble in bad weather near Jackson Bay, south Westland on Thursday night.

Detective Constable Jayne Bretherton said the dive squad would focus on the areas around Smoothwater Bay and Homminy Cove.

Two fishing nets have been found on the shoreline in that area, which police believed were likely to have come from the boat.

Ms Bretherton said there were no ground crews out today and it was hoped the dive squad would get to the spot where the vessel went down.

One man survived the incident, in which the boat is believed to have lost power.
