Thousands without power in Nelson region

Power has been cut to about 12,000 properties in the Nelson region this afternoon.

Transpower said it was working with the lines company Network Tasman to repair the fault by re-configuring the network.

Network Tasman says the outage affected properties in Mapua, Richmond, Brightwater and Nelson north.

Power has been partially restored to some properties..

Network Tasman says the outage was the result of a fault at Transpower's substation at Stoke.

People in Mapua, Richmond, Brightwater and Nelson north are affected.

It said it could not confirm it was linked to this afternoon's 5.1 quake near Seddon in Marlborough, but it was likely given the timing.
