Broadcaster and journalist David Beatson dies

Broadcaster and journalist David Beatson - whose career spanned newspaper, magazine, radio, television and online - has died after a long illness.

Mr Beatson was born in Dunedin in 1944 and began his career in journalism at the Otago Daily Times in 1962.

He was a senior current affairs host and interviewer on Television New Zealand, and also edited the Listener from 1984 to 1988.

Mr Beatson went on to hold several senior government and public affairs roles, including as chairman of New Zealand on Air and vice-president of Air New Zealand.

He also served as chief press secretary to Prime Minister Jim Bolger.

He is survived by his wife Lesley, two children, three stepchildren and 11 grandchildren.
