Man dies after violent attack in Auckland stairwell

A homicide investigation has been launched after a man was found dead in a stairwell after suffering what police say was a violent attack at an Auckland property.

They were called to an address on Great North Road late last night after a man's body was found at the stairwell of an address.

The man was found in the stairwell at a block of flats on Great North Road in Western Springs about 11pm yesterday.

They said a 29-year-old man whose image was seen on CCTV footage from the scene had been found in Central Auckland and was helping with their enquiries.

They said they could not yet rule out the possiblity of laying charges on the man.

Police said the victim had suffered a violent attack which caused fatal injuries.

"We are in the very early stages of our investigation and are still in the process of identifying the victim but believe it to be a 69-year-old man who lived at the address."

Residents at the flats said they were saddened and shocked.

Junior Li lives opposite the flats and said it was normally quiet.

"Just feel shocked because I always see the kids around, and you don't want the kids to see this. Hopefully they find whatever happened."

Police are looking to locate a man seen on CCTV footage from a camera at the scene.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said a number of detectives were now working on this investigation.

"We want to assure our community that we undertaking a thorough investigation to establish what has happened.

"We are asking the public if they have any information which can assist us in identifying the man pictured to please contact us as soon as possible."
