DNA samples taken from 190 young people

Police took DNA samples from nearly 200 young people aged under 17 in the past year, but it is not clear how many of them were charged with an offence.

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira has accused the police of using Nazi-style coercion tactics in order to illegally collect DNA samples from young people.

During Parliament's question time on Wednesday, Mr Harawira asked Police Minister Judith Collins about the collection of the samples.

Ms Collins replied that the DNA database contains more than 100,000 profiles but that in the past 12 months only 190 samples have been taken from people aged under 17.

She says due to the limited time available, the police have not been able to carry out an audit to establish the exact details of the cases.
