Police said the 37-year-old driver failed to stop after police tried to pull him over on Hill Rd in Manurewa at about 3.45pm.

Officers then gave chase and deployed road spikes.

Senior Sergeant John Roberts said despite the car's tyres being deflated, the driver continued to speed down the wrong side of the road.

Police abandoned the chase due to safety reasons.

"The Police Eagle Helicopter monitored the vehicle and at approximately 4pm the driver pulled over on Great South Road, Takanini," he said.

"The alleged offender then attempted to carjack a number of vehicles."

The man was arrested by police shortly after.

During the arrest, he suffered injuries to his ankle and has been transported to Middlemore Hospital for treatment.

"This incident was extremely dangerous and fluid, we appreciate the cooperation of members of the public who were affected," said Roberts.

Police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or who was allegedly approached by the man to contact Counties Manukau Police.
