Johnathon Seal, 25, and Michael Harrison Cooper, 31, appeared in the Christchurch District Court this morning facing charges of importing a Class A drug, and possession of methamphetamine for supply.
The men were arrested last week after a joint police and customs operation.
Neither has entered a plea at Christchurch District Court, and both have been remanded in custody for a further hearing.
Police said the $50 million worth of drugs arrived in Christchurch on 1 November in an air-freighted consignment of safety lights sent from Mexico.
They said the drugs were in 40 separate packages weighing 1-1.2kg each. It was the largest seizure of methamphetamine in the South Island, police said.
