A mother who attempted to suffocate her nine-month-old baby and caused her daughter to go on harmful medication has been jailed for seven years and one month.
The woman, who has name suppression, had earlier been found guilty of neglect and ill-treating her children and was sentenced at the High Court in Auckland today.
She has been diagnosed with factitious disorder imposed on another; a mental condition which involves fabricating symptoms of illness in another person.
The woman took her daughter to the doctor more than 100 times, making up symptoms that caused the girl to undergo invasive medical tests and go on different medications.
She attempted to suffocate her new baby and filmed him lying in his cot as his condition worsened.
Crown prosecutor Mark Harborow said until the woman acknowledged her offending it would be a long road to rehabilitation.
