Two teenagers have set a new unofficial world record for the longest squash game, playing for 40 hours and 41 seconds.

Kaitlyn Watts and Richard Bell, both 16, played for 40 hours and 41 seconds.

Speaking after the epic match at the SquashGym in Palmerston North, a very tired Kaitlyn said she began hallucinating at one point.

"It was quite scary - the whole court was changing really.

"The ball wasn't the ball, it was something else, and Richard - he wasn't really sure where he was either.

"But a quick 20 minute nap really helped."

The longest squash marathon recorded by Guinness World Records is a 38-hour 27-second match by British players Len Granger and Jamie Barnett in 2015.

Kaitlyn Watts' father, Grant, said while the teenagers surpassed that, their feat wouldn't make it into the official record book.

That would have required independent observers around the clock.

"It would have cost $2000 to register the attempt - and as it's a fundraiser, they couldn't justify it," he said.

The pair are raising money to go to the United States and British Junior Open competitions in December.

The teenagers aimed to raise $10,000 for the trip.
