A man had to get emergency surgery after being struck over the head with a wine glass in South Auckland late last night.

Police said the 52-year-old man was attacked by a group of people he didn't know around 11.30pm outside a bar on Queen Street in Otahuhu.
Police said the man remains in Middlemore Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
They said they have strong lines of inquiry but would like to hear anyone who witnessed the attack.
