A fire which caused Sky City Hotel to be evacuated this morning has been put out.
Fire Crews were called to the fire on the second story just after 11am.
Assistant area commander Barry Fox said 12 crews and a cherrypicker were called to the fire as a precaution.
"The fire was in the generator room, it was pretty small and was put out by the first crew that went in."
Michael Cooke was a tourist from Perth looking on. He arrived at the Sky Tower to do a tour just as it was unfolding.
"[I saw] smoke coming from the top area where the chimney is ... where that stainless steel stack is."
Another witness, David Sanc, said fire crews arrived about five minutes after it started smoking.
"It was brown smoke coming from the unit and then the engine just came in and they watered the unit."
Auckland's Sky City Hotel was evacuated, but the casino remained operating.
The cause is being investigated.
