Residents in the Malborough and Wellington region were shaken awake by the earthquake that hit at 12.40am.

The epicentre was 15 kilometres south-east of Seddon, at a depth of 20 kilometres.

GeoNet recorded a total of 46 people reported feeling the earthquake.

It follows a 3.8 magnitude earthquake which briefly interrupted Wellingtonians Boxing Day festivities last night.

The earthquake hit just after 7.15pm.

The epicentre was 10 kilometres southwest of Wellington, at a depth of 25 kilometres.

It was felt mostly in Wellington, Upper and Lower Hutt, Kapiti Coast and the top of the South Island around Picton.

However, there were reports of weak shaking in the Far North and as far south as Dunedin.

GeoNet recorded more than 4000 'felt' reports.
