The incident happened yesterday on Victoria Street near Chews Lane, after a female officer got into a scuffle trying to arrest a much larger man.

Three members of the public stepped in and held the man down, and the officer handcuff him.

A photo of the incident was put on the Wellington District Police Facebook page and has so far received more than 1500 reactions.

Most comments were in support of the good samaritans and the officer involved.

Responding to questions, police said it was common for traffic officers to work alone, but in this instance help was only moments away.

The situation unfolded just metres away from the local police station.

The officer involved was not injured.
