This is the fifth year Oliver has topped the boys' list.

Charlotte - which is also the name of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's daughter - was second on the list in 2016.

Other names that have become more popular include Mila and Arlo, while James remains a favourite with it appearing in the top 20 every year since 1963.

Willow has also become an increasingly popular name for baby girls.

Last year, 60,935 babies were registered using SmartStart - a free app that makes it easy for parents to register a baby and obtain an IRD number.

It also helps parents adjust Ministry of Social Development benefits, or update a Working for Families application.
