The Transport Agency (NZTA) says work repairing the quake damaged State Higway One between Christchurch and Picton will ramp up next week, as the summer holidays draw to a close.

The road north of Kaikōura re-opened to motorists in December, more than a year after being closed by large slips, but repair work is still ongoing.

NZTA said over the holiday period crews were stood down, which helped traffic flow.

But it said crews will be back on the ground on Monday, and motorists should expect further delays.

The two most earthquake-damaged sections of the highway, which are north and south of Kaikōura, are closed at night while repair work is being done.
