Mr Stirling is described as frail with mild dementia and there are concerns for his well-being.

Until now the search has been focussed on the Flagstaff area near Mr Stirling's home in Halcione Close, Hamilton.

Search co-ordinator Vince Ranger said the search area would be extended into other northern suburbs and include the Waikato River.

He said all properties were being searched.

Mr Stirling could be wearing blue track pants and white and red sneakers, and carrying a black walking stick.

Mr Ranger said all the obvious places have been searched.

"We will continue searching until we can say we have done as much as we can."

In the past Mr Stirling has been known to flag down motorists for a lift.

He said police were keen for any information or sightings of Mr Stirling.

"There is a chance he got a lift from someone outside the greater North Hamilton area but less likely than him simply walking (off) from home.

"We've been fortunate that the weather, albeit with some rain, has been relatively warm."

"As time passes we are growing gravely concerned for his well-being," he said.

Land Search and Rescue volunteers from Auckland, Tauranga and Coromandel will join the weekend search.
