Officers found the item while searching in the Blackhead area about five kilometres from the 16-year-old's home, where she was found dead on Saturday morning.

Police have not confirmed what the item is, but there are reports it is the teenager's cellphone.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Hanna said police still wanted to hear from the occupants of a Toyota Camry or similar vehicle, which was parked in a car park at Blackhead Quarry about midnight Friday.

Police want the public to report any sightings of a silver two-door BMW, which was believed to have travelled from Dunedin to Balclutha between midnight and about 2am on Saturday.

The investigation was ongoing, Mr Hanna said.
