Official figures put the number of contenders at 14,455 - higher than the 14,300 who ran last year.

Participants had a choice of doing a half marathon, a 10km or 6km run or a 10km walk with a buggy.

Sport Wellington CEO Phil Gibbons called it one of New Zealand's largest events of its kind.

"We were focused on delivering an event that was in keeping with our vision that 'everyone in the greater Wellington regions has a life-long involvement in sport and active recreation," he said.

"It was great to see everyone come into the city and enjoy the really fantastic experience."
