Police say the 14-year-old who was behind the wheel of the stolen car failed to stop for officers in Manurewa just before 2pm yesterday afternoon.

A chase began and the car was tracked along Auckland's busy northern motorway by a police helicopter.

Road spikes were used to try and stop the car near Puhoi, north of the city.

Police said the pregnant woman had tried to stop to avoid the spikes, and the teenage driver drove into the back of her car.

The driver of the stolen car has appeared in the Youth Court today on charges including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, reckless driving causing injury, burglary, and failing to stop for the police.

An 11-year-old passenger has been referred to Youth Aid.

Police said the pregnant woman was taken to hospital, but both she and her unborn baby were okay.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
