A Ministry of Primary Industries spokesperson says Steven John Wells, 45, was convicted of six counts under the Animal Welfare Act.

Wells was a farm manager at Maratoa Farm near Takaka.

They say the offending took place several years ago, in 2015 and 2016, and included breaking the tails of cows, hitting them with a metal pipe, and kicking, kneeing and punching them.

Wells' trial lasted four days at the Nelson District court last week.

He will be sentenced at the end of the month.
