Heavy rain and thunderstorms are hitting the Gisborne ranges and Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki this morning.

MetService said 70 millimetres could fall today, with up to 25 millimetres falling an hour during thunderstorms.
A severe weather watch is in place until 8pm tonight.
