Australian captain Steve Smith admitted the team planned to tamper with the ball as a means of getting an advantage in the game.

Australian Cricket chief executive James Sutherland said the news was shocking and extremely disappointing.

He said head of integrity Ian Roy and head of performance Pat Howard are on their way to South Africa to talk to all of those involved.

He wouldn't say whether Steve Smith could be sacked as captain, saying there is a process to go through.

But he said Cricket Australia wanted to deal with the issue quickly, probably within the next couple of days.
